Cheng Ran (b. 1981, China) finished his residency programme at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Netherlands, in 2014. In 2017, he founded the artist institution MARTIN GOYA BUSINESS. Cheng focuses on new media, and his artworks mainly consist of videos and films. At the beginning of his career, his films were not precise or cinematic. Instead, he merely wished to convey personal and private feelings. Over time, this form of expression developed to a professional level and he started to discuss larger issues in his artwork. The themes of his videos often revolve around the unsolvable problems in life, such as identity and mortality. Cheng has received numerous awards in the “Best Video Artist” categories and also has previously participated in the Istanbul Biennale (2015), exhibited at Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2014), the New Museum, New York (2016) and performed at the Sydney Opera House, Sydney (2019).
