KIM Whanki’s Formative Experiments on “Dots,, Lines, Planes and Colors”

This work Sounds of Spring presents viewers with a sense of rhythm, reminding them of the shimmering warmth and seasonal liveliness of spring, in a banquet of tender but vivid color dots. The light, clean and fluid sky-blue picture-plane, reminding one of a watercolor painting, embraces dots of diverse colors, while the dots, each with unique expression, vibrate subtly through repetition and transformation, revealing their movement toward lyric abstraction.
This work was made with light oils on rough hemp fabric. The diverse attempts Kim made during this period created a momentum, allowing him to find appropriate methodologies for the completion of his unique oil painting technique, and to proceed one step closer to his “all-over dot paintings” in his later period.
